As well as flood protection, the Consortium is both highly active and
responsible in providing protection in a wide range of conservation areas
such as:
Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI)
and Biodiversity amongst
many others.
One major element of our conservation work is managing water levels
in these areas for the benefit of wildlife and to ensure that the environment
in the Consortium's defined area, is managed correctly to meet with current
legislation and for future generations to enjoy. This work is carried out
in conjunction with bodies such as:
English Nature and
The Broads Authority, and wherever possible:
with grant aid from Defra.
Everyone has seen the enormous damage to lives and property of recent major floods as changes to the climate take a volatile turn for the worse. The York floods in 2000 and the Bocastle floods of 2004 are dramatic reminders of the need for better and far reaching methods of flood protection. The Consortium was formed with these issues in mind and to be able to provide a range of high quality water level management services to the residents of Norfolk. Integrated Management Information: The Consortium has invested in a Management Information System (MIS) which has been developed specifically for both the administration and operational needs of the Consortium's various activities. This system integrates every aspect of our business and allows all staff to view information on any item from: Watercourse Maintenance to Water levels, Pumping Station maintenance to how many hours each has pump run and electricity usage, Byelaws to Planning, Land ownership to rate charges and Biodiversity to compliance with Conservation regulations. All the staff at the Consortium can access and use the 'MIS' with minimal computer knowledge being required as all functions and reports are available at the click of a mouse. This system will be extended to be available on-line in the near future for the use of our rate-payers and for general information on our activities.
